Born Nov. 28 1933, in Suffolk, he was the son of the late Thomas F. and Pearl Turner Carter. Mr. Carter was the owner and operator of Carter Furniture in Ahoskie, N.C. He was a member of Great Fork Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Marion Ward Carter; daughter, Sharon Carter Detrick and her husband Stephen of Merritt Island, Fla.; son. Lawrence Shelton Carter, Jr. of Smithfield; sister, Carolyn C. Wright and husband Wilbur A. of Suffolk; brothers and their wives, Thomas F. and Sara C. Carter Jr. of Franklin, Donald E. and Edna Earl Carter of Suffolk, David B. and Priscilla G. Carter of Suffolk; grandchildren, Angela, April and Rachel Detrick; sister-in-law, Edith W. Byrum of Chesapeake, Mary W. and Delmar Carter of Suffolk; brother-in-law, C. Thomas and Patsy Ward Jr. of Gates, N.C.; several nieces and nephews. A funeral was conducted Dec. 10 in Great Fork Baptist Church by the Revs. Jonathon Judy and Steven W. Byrum with burial in the church cemetery. The family received friends at R.W. Baker and Co.
