Clarence Waylon ``Smiley'' Britton Sr., 56, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, after a long and courageous struggle. He was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. He was a self-employed truck driver leased out by Marine Freight Co. of Portsmouth, before he had to stop due to medical reasons. 

He is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, Vivian J. Britton; a daughter, Mary Leigh Britton of Carrsville; a son, C.W. Britton Jr. and his wife, Kim, of Waverly, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Amanda Cook and Adam Cook of Ohio. 

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Beaver Dam Baptist Church by Dr. Richard Peerey. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Holland-Rideout Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Mrs. Libby Jernigan, Carrsville, Va. Donations can be made to a memorial fund for Waylon Britton, c/o of Farmers Bank, Att: Patty Webb, P.O. Box 285, Windsor, VA 23487.
