Obituary of GAY CRUTCHFIELD BIRDSONG The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA) - December 16, 1994 Gay Crutchfield Birdsong, 55, of 805 Riverview Drive, died Dec. 14, 1994, in Charlottesville. A native of Winston-Salem, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Douglas Charles and Imogene Boyles Crutchfield. Mrs. Birdsong was an active member of Main Street United Methodist Church and was the current president of the Portsmouth District United Methodist Women. She was a 1957 graduate of Fairfax Hall in Waynesboro and a 1960 graduate of Stratford College in Danville. She attended Mount Vernon College. Active in many community organizations, Mrs. Birdsong was the 1992-1994 president of the Suffolk Council of Garden Clubs, a past president of the Nansemond River Garden Club, the Suffolk Literary Club and the Social Club. She was currently serving on the board of the Virginia Opera and on the Suffolk Fine Arts Commission. Mrs. Birdsong and her husband were instrumental in the founding of the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in 1966. She was a co-author of two books, ''Who Cares Who I Am'' and ''My Bible Rainy Day and Travel Book.'' Survivors include her husband, Cabell Brooking Birdsong; two daughters, Imogene ''Gigi'' B. Ramsey of Smithfield and Jane Douglas Birdsong of Atlanta. A funeral service will be conducted today at 11 a.m. in Main Street United Methodist Church by Dr. Alan Felumlee. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will be at the home. R.W. Baker & Company Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
