Battle Sr., 81, of the 1500 block of Clay St. died Sept. 24, 1997, at his home. Mr. Battle was born in Hertford County, N.C., a son of the late James O'Berry and Lessie Riddick Battle. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a retired supervisor at Birdsong Peanut Co. He was a member of Hunterdale United Church of Christ and the American Legion Post No. 73, Franklin. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Bonnie Holcombe Battle; his son, Lemuel Bembry Battle Jr. and his wife, Denise, of Salem, Va.; a half-brother, Edward King of Cabot, Ark.; a grandson, Barry Griffin Battle of Salem; two stepgrandchildren, Anita E. Seagle of Roanoke and Forrest L. Seagle IV stationed with the U.S. Army in Korea. He was predeceased by a sister, Sue Retta DeGrange and a brother, James Battle. A graveside funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Southampton Memorial Park by the Rev. Dr. Alan Campbell. The family will receive friends at 7 p.m. Friday in Wright Funeral Home and suggests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Ruth Petty, 116 Southampton Road, Franklin, Va. 23851.
