Obituary of John Beverly “Ben” Barksdale III JOHN BEVERLY BARKSDALE III Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Friday, May 23, 1997 John Beverly "Ben" Barksdale III, 43, of Ivor Road died May 21, 1997. He was a lifelong resident of Southampton County and the owner of Truck City. As a successful businessman and entrepreneur, he prided himself on his intuitive ability to determine the needs of people and his ability to meet those needs. Although known for his gruff demeanor and fiery temper, his unselfishness and generosity overwhelmed his persona. While having no desire for recognition, he contributed tremendously of himself both in time and money to community endeavors. He was a lifelong member of the Courtland United Methodist Church. He was predeceased by his mother, June P. Barksdale, and is survived by his wife of 18 years, Esther Babb Barksdale; his son, John Beverly Barksdale IV; father, John B. Barksdale Jr.; brother, Thomas D. Barksdale; sister, Connie C. Davis; 11 nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Babb, Frances Babb, Stephanie Rose, Jerry Davis Rose Jr., Richard Edward Railey III, Benjamin Babb Railey, John Davis, Jason Davis, Justin Barksdale, Bobby Barksdale and Cody Barksdale; his aunts, Anne Forehand and Dena Barksdale. A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Riverside Cemetery by the Rev. Robert Parks. The family suggests that memorial donations may be made to the Courtland United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association, c/o June Duck, Southampton Memorial Hospital, 100 Fairview Drive, Franklin, Va. 23851.
