John Earl Bailey Jr., 60, passed away Oct. 24, 2003 at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk. 

Earl was a teacher, deacon, Sunday school director and lifelong member of Ivor Baptist Church. He served on the Ivor Town Council for 33 years and worked at the Newport News Shipyard for 40 years. 

Mr. Bailey was predeceased by his father, John Earl Bailey Sr. and is survived by his wife, Jane L. Bailey; a son, Christopher Mark Bailey; a grandchild; his mother, Annie Betty Bailey, all of Ivor; and a brother, Martin Bailey of Dahlgren, Va. 

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Ivor Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Gupton, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Ivor Cemetery . Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ivor Baptist Church, P.O. Box 310, Ivor, VA 23866 or to Ivor Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 228, Ivor, VA 23866.
