Obituary of William McLemore Babb WILLIAM McLEMORE BABB Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - September 8, 1997 William McLemore Babb, 78, of the 400 block of Forest Hill Crescent, died Sept. 7, 1997. A native of Southampton County, he was a son of the late Emmett Francis and Irma Barnes Babb. He retired from Birdsong Peanut Co. as the cold storage manager. Mr. Babb was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where he had served on the Administrative Board, as Youth Division superintendent, Sunday School teacher for 17 years, chairman of Ushers, chairman of Stewardship and many other committees of the church. He served as scoutmaster of Troop 1 sponsored by the church for 10 years and as Troop treasurer for 23 years after stepping down as scoutmaster. He was awarded the Silver Beaver by the Old Dominion Area Council, Boy Scouts of America in 1963. In June 1997 he was awarded the God and Service Award by his church and scout troop. He was a member of the Suffolk Kiwanis Club for 42 years and was awarded a lifetime membership in Kiwanis International and a lifetime honorary membership in the Suffolk Kiwanis Club. He served as treasurer for the Suffolk Kiwanis Club for 20 years. He served on the Suffolk Recreational Board for 20 years, serving twice as chairman. Survivors include his wife, Catherine Simms Babb; a daughter, Juanita B. Kravetz of Fredericksburg; a son, William M. Babb Jr. of Osceola, Ind.; three sisters, Mildred Strickler of Newport News, Mary Katherine Greig of Charlotte, N.C., and Irma Rawlings of Courtland; 10 grandchildren, William McLemore Babb III, Caryn Margaret Bley, Elizabeth Catherine Bley, Heather Susan Bley, Brandon John Babb, Alan Kravetz, Andrew Kravetz, Nathan Kravetz, Katheryn Kravetz, Elizabeth Kravetz; and a great-granddaughter, Lauren Kate Babb. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Main Street United Methodist Church by Dr. Alan Felumlee with burial in Holly Lawn Cemetery.
