Obituary of ESTheR JOYNER ATKINS The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA) - Sunday, January 16, 1994 Esther Joyner Atkins, age 81, a resident of Rt. 1, Courtland , died Friday, Jan. 14, 1994, at East Pavilion, Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin. She was the widow of William David Atkins. A native of Isle of Wight County she was daughter of the late John and Lula Fowler Joyner. She was a member of the Courtland Baptist Church and the Story Bible Class and the Elizabeth Edwards Circle of the church. She was a dedicated and gracious Christian mother to her large, close-knit family. Surviving are three daughters, Shelva A. Edwards, Franklin, Betty A. Hawkins, Bedford, and Dorothy A. Turner, Suffolk; five sons, William A. Atkins, Richmond, James T. Atkins, Ashville, N.C., John W. Atkins, Franklin, Edgar A. Atkins, Courtland , and George H. Atkins, Suffolk; one sister, Carrie J. Byrum, Portsmouth, four brothers, Charles Joyner and Arthur Joyner, both of Suffolk, Jim Joyner of North Carolina and Jackson Joyner, Windsor; 26 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Edwin David Atkins and was sister of the late Virgie J. Howell. A graveside funeral service will be held in Riverside Cemetery , Courtland , on Monday, January 17, 1994, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Gary Powell. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Courtland Baptist Church Memorial Fund. The family will be at 229 Crescent Drive, Franklin, VA.
