He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Eastover-Wilroy Ruritan Club and Disabled American Veterans 41, Portsmouth. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Elise Lowe Asbell; three daughters, Constance A. Insley and Jenny A. Holleman, both of Suffolk, and Sandra A. Ward of Zebulon, N.C.; a son, Fred N. Asbell, and a brother, Ralph M. Asbell, both of Suffolk; and eight grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home by the Rev. Carter Dey.
