George Gurley Junior served as justice of the peace between 13 May 1784 and 1790 at Southampton County, Virginia.[5]
On 14 October 1784 at Southampton County, Virginia, was ordered to lay off the lands granted to county for the purpose of building a courthouse, Gurley obviously had surveying equipment and experience.[5]
He served as sheriff in 1792 at Southampton County, Virginia, he was one of only two rectors know to have held this office. The sheriff served warrants, apprehended and arrested suspects, conducted elections, executed sentences of the court at the jail, whipping post, stocks, pillory, and the ducking stool, and collected taxes.
George Gurley was a member of the House of Burgesses from: 1808 to 1810 serving on the Propositions and Grievances Committee.
